What is Karate Kumite?
Kumite is the sparring discipline of Karate where two competitors fight directly against each other. MartialMatch supports Aka/Shiro (red/white) Kumite based on Kyokushin/contact Karate rules, including Waza-ari, Ippon and penalty scoring.
Scoreboard layout
The scoreboard uses a two-column layout with Aka (red) on the right and Shiro (white) on the left, matching the standard mat convention where the referee faces the monitor with the red competitor on their right.

Scoring
Each competitor has three scoring boxes:
| Box | Action |
|---|---|
| Waza-ari (wide box) | Click to award a Waza-ari. Small ✕ button to remove one. |
| Chui | Click to add a penalty. Small ✕ button to remove one. |
| Genten | Click to add a heavier penalty. Small ✕ button to remove one. |
When a competitor reaches 2 Waza-ari, the timer stops automatically and an Awasete Ippon badge appears. The operator then confirms the result via the finish modal.
Timer and overtime
The fight timer is displayed in the lower-centre area. The operator can start, pause, and reset it using the controls section. To configure the fight duration, click the timer — typical durations are 1, 1.5, 2 or 3 minutes depending on age category and event rules.
Overtime is handled entirely through the timer: after regular time expires, the operator sets a new duration and restarts the timer. An OVERTIME badge appears above the timer for both the operator and display screens.
Finishing a fight
Click the Finish fight button to open the finish modal. Each competitor side offers the following options:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Ippon | Full point — decisive finish. |
| Awasete Ippon | Two Waza-ari — combined full point. |
| Hantei | Judges decision. |
| Other options | Judges decision (alias), Shikkaku (disqualification), Kiken (withdrawal), Fusen-gachi (opponent no-show), No contest. |
For Hantei / Judges decision, an optional Decision score field is available:
- Not recorded (default)
- Unanimous decision
- Split decision
- Overtime decision
Round-robin ranking
When the competition uses a round-robin bracket and multiple athletes have the same number of wins and losses, the system breaks ties using the following criteria in order:
- Win — a win always outranks a loss, regardless of anything else.
- Finish type — decisive finishes rank higher than a judges decision: Ippon / Shikkaku / Kiken / Fusen-gachi outrank Awasete Ippon, which outranks Hantei.
- Waza-ari count — more Waza-ari scored is better.
- Penalties received — fewer Chui and Genten is better (Genten weighs more than Chui).
