How does general ranking work?

Oct 19, 2024, 7:00:00 PM UTC

The MartialMatch system calculates the general ranking of competitors based on the results obtained in competitions. It is available in the Community -> Rankings tab.

Ranking is based on the Elo algorithm (Elo Rating System), which is used in many sports disciplines such as chess, tennis, or bridge. This algorithm allows to determine the strength of a competitor based on the results obtained in duels with other competitors.

How does ranking work?

  1. Base points — each competitor starts their adventure with the ranking from a certain number of base points. In the case of MartialMatch, this is 0 points.
  2. Points for a match/fight — after each match/fight, the system awards points for a win or loss. The number of points depends on the strength of the opponent and the result of the match.
  3. Points calculation — the system calculates a new value of points for the competitor based on the result of the match and the base points.

What factors affect the ranking?

  • Opponent's strength — the stronger the opponent, the more points can be gained for a win. A stronger opponent is one who has more points in the ranking. This means that if we win against a weaker competitor, we gain a negligible number of points, and in case of a loss, we risk losing a large number of points.
  • Fight duration — the number of points obtained for a win is weighted by the duration of the match. Fights in adult categories are more highly rated than fights in children's categories.
  • Match ending — the system rewards ending the fight before time. In the case of MMA, it is KO, TKO, and in grappling, BJJ, or ADCC it is submission. In the case of wrestling matches, it is pinning to the mat.

Example of the weight of points for a match

Category Time of match Fight finished by Calculated weight of the match
Kids 4 min. (0.2) Submission (2.0) 0.2 x 2.0 = 0.4
Adults/junior - white belts / beginners 5 min. (0.5) Points (1.0) 0.5 x 1.0 = 0.5
Adults / blue-black belts / intermediate-PRO / adult-master 1 6 min. (1.0) Submission (2.0) 1.0 x 2.0 = 2.0
